Many districts in CA are moving towards the adoption of the Pattern of Strengths and Weaknesses Model for SLD identification. This training will cover the PSW model as used within the Ventura County SELPA with an emphasis on key considerations when assessing English learners (ELs) via this model. This presentation will review EL specific best practices, legal requirements, as well as provide resources & tools, as participant walk through the main steps of the PSW model. Participants will be asked to apply EL considerations while drawing upon their clinical judgment and critical thinking skills using case studies of ELs with various English proficiency levels and backgrounds. Content will cover the areas of pre-referral interventions, assessment, and the analysis of data.
Jenny Ponzuric, MA, LEP, ABSNP, is one of the lead trainers on the Ventura County SELPA PSW Model. She previously served as a Director within the Ventura County Office of Education and as a school psychologist 13 years. She is a Past President of both CASP and VCASP. Ponzuric has also earned her Post-Graduate Certificate in School Neuropsychology.
