M-10: Restorative Mediation to Reduce Teacher-Student Conflict across Racial Lines
10:00 a.m. – 11:20 a.m.
“My teacher is racist!” Racial disparities in discipline are prevalent. Often, conflicts occur because teachers and students lack the opportunity to build trust and understanding in their relationship. Using real life examples and “in the trenches” humor, the presenter will show how to facilitate a voluntary, 50-minute restorative teacher-student mediation – an evidenced-based Tier II intervention that promotes social skills and student learning. The mini-skills presentation will also teach how to collect and monitor data. Data will show restorative mediation as highly effective in repairing relationships and reducing disciplinary referrals across demographics.
