W-30: Comprehensive Suicide Prevention: Meeting the Mandates of AB2246

After reviewing the mandate for comprehensive suicide prevention generated by the adoption of AB 2246 (which has required the governing boards of all California school districts that serve student in grades 7-12 to adopt a comprehensive suicide prevention policy beginning this fall) this workshop will review activities judged to be consistent with the intent of this law. It will review primary suicide prevention, immediate suicide intervention, and suicide postvention activities.

Richard Lieberman MA, NCSP is the Lead Consultant for the CalMHSA Student Mental Health Initiative for the Los Angeles County Office of Education. He is a lecturer in the Graduate School of Education at Loyola Marymount University and from 1986-2011 he coordinated Suicide Prevention Services for Los Angeles Unified School District. Mr. Lieberman is co-author of School Crisis Prevention: the PREPaRE Model and Best Practices in Suicide Intervention (IV, V and VI) for the National Association of School Psychologists.

Susan K. Coats, Ed.D., LEP, is the CASP Chair on Mental Health and Crisis Consultation, a CDE Student Mental Health Policy Workgroup member, the Mental Health Officer for her district’s Crisis Response and Threat Assessment Team, and the high school advisor for a NAMI On Campus Club. In addition, she is a trainer for Youth Mental Health First Aid, PREPaRE, and the Student Mental Health Initiative. Recent workshops have included “Threat Prevention and Assessment” and “Repairing Harm and Restoring Relationships” that involved school law enforcement, district personnel, and community mental health members.
