W-02: Black Parents’ Perspective on School Psychology: A qualitative research study
9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Black youth are overrepresented in special education and it is school psychologists who find the students eligible. The study shares parents’ self-reported attributes of school psychologists as well as experiences in schools with educators and/or mental health providers. Parents also suggest workshops they would like to see from psychologists.

Dr. Brandon E. Gamble is an assistant professor in school psychology at California State University, Long Beach. Dr. Gamble’s research interests include disproportionality of minority students in special education placements, social capital networks of program leaders, access of all students to high quality instruction and student support services, as well as the empowerment of minorities in education.
